April Member Spotlight: Keith Hayes

How did you get into the insurance business?

I was getting out of the Navy after a 10 years of service.  My discharge date was in the first part of 2002, not that long after 9/11, which meant a poor job market/economy.  At the time, my Father in Law owned an insurance agency, and invited me to get licensed, and the rest of it is history.  I’m still employed at the same agency since then!

How has your career benefited from being a member?

I think, for me, it has been the opportunity to network with other insurance professionals, whether it’s on the agency side, or carrier/brokerage side.  Also, while serving on the board for the PIA of NC, we, as a board, had a lot of challenges to overcome and to learn about ourselves.  I think, as a whole, all of it was a great experience to learn and grow personally and professionally.

What would be the theme song of your life right now?

With the current insurance market today?  Under Pressure by Queen & David Bowie

Who/what inspires you?

I think those that inspire me most are those that have a bad day, or two, or three, but keep going and moving forward with their job, life, families, etc.  Not every day is going to be an easy one, but to be successful, you have to deal with the now and plan for the future.

What do you love the most about your job?

Being able to help people with a subject most find to be foreign.  Helping them to find the right coverage for them as an individual, or business.  No two families or businesses are the same, so each requires a different level of care or help to best allot their insurance budget appropriately.

What are you reading or listening to?

At the time, nothing, other than the occasional article.  I have been studying for another designation program I’ve been working on.

Floodplain Education

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is a Federal program, established by Congress in 1968, that allows property owners to purchase federally-backed flood insurance within communities that participate in the program.  In return for this insurance protection, participating communities implement floodplain measures to reduce flood risks to the new development.  Through this program, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and participating communities are able to reduce future flood losses.
